3 Reasons You Should Consider A Career In Consulting

3 Reasons you should consider a Career in ConsultingThis is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules -- .The career transitions where I can help you center on three critical career areas: How to land a job, succeed in a job, and build employment security.Top 10 Posts on CategoriesThe sad reality is that most people are unhappy with their jobs. The top reason most are unhappy is they find it unfulfilling. Everyday they go to the same place, work on the same activities, with the same people. What can start as excitement can quickly fade into monotony. For those that are looking for new experiences, new skills and new challenges, Consulting may be an excellent option. Consulting is a broad term that can encompass everyone from a political advisor to large multi-national IT outsourcers. For this article we’ll focus on the more common definition of a Bu siness Consultant.A Business Consultant generally works for a firm that can have between 20 to 2,000 people and focuses on a range of business issues spanning operations, technology, strategy and human capital. Other firms hire business consultants to solve problems they cannot solve themselves. The consultant will work on a specific project for anywhere from 2 months to 2 years, and then move onto the next. Here are 3 reasons you may want to consider a career in consulting:Consultants, almost by definition, are temporary. They are brought in to address a specific issue and then move onto the next. As a consultant you will find yourself working in different industries, with different issues, with different people, in different parts of the country. Each new project is a new start and a new challenge. If you are someone who craves new opportunities and new problems to solve, consulting may be a great choice.Companies hire consultants because the problem to be solved is either too hard or too specialized to solve by themselves. This means consulting firms need to hire the brightest and most experienced candidates. When you bring a critical mass of smart, creative thinkers together they naturally push each other to develop the best solution possible. If you’re someone who is constantly looking to learn from others and contribute to exciting new ideas, then consulting may be a great choiceLet’s not beat around the bush, consulting tends to be one of the higher paying careers. As mentioned above, companies hire consultants because the problem to be solved is either too hard or too specialized to some themselves. Consulting firms charge a premium for their ability to come in and solve those tough problems and share that wealth with their employees. Consulting firms tend to be smaller partnerships, without shareholders, so the profits stay with the firm. If you’re looking to move into a higher paying career bracket, consulting may be a great choice. So sounds gre at, right? Well, maybe, but it is not for everyone. The same reasons some people may want a consulting career can also be reasons why some should not. The constant challenge, while being invigorating for some, can be exhausting for others. Starting over in a new industry or a new business every 3-4 months can tend to burn people out. A firm full of “smart” people can seem inspiring to some, or irritating to others. A higher salary can come with a tradeoff of longer hours and less work-life balance. These are all things to consider and do some research to fully understand. The best place to start is by looking online, Consulting Magazine and talking to any friends or colleagues who have worked as, or know, a consultant. If you’re someone who craves variety, wants to be challenged, likes working with smart people and is looking to potentially increase their earnings, you should definitely consider a career in consulting.Kevin Kennedy is co-founder of College2Consulting.com, which helps applicants land jobs with top tier consulting firms. Account â€" I utilize portable applications from my credit association, monetary consultant, Mastercard organization, and PayPal. I can store checks legitimately from my iPhone. How to Approach Someone Important - The Muse

Instructions to Approach Someone Important - The Muse Instructions to Approach Someone Important You're sitting in a bistro staying out of other people's affairs, when out of nowhere you notice that the individual you've needed to have as a guide or manager is sitting at a close by table. This could be your defining moment to establish a decent connection, or you could absolutely fail miserably in cumbersomeness. So what do you do? This situation was an inquiry that a peruser in New York messaged me. What's more, in the event that you've had minutes like this, as well, you have three alternatives. Two of them are ones that you're most likely previously gauging. The third is somewhat startling yet could put you a lot more like a seat at that table later on. 1. Sit idle We should move this now. Truly, doing nothing is an alternative. However, in case you're extremely genuine about your vocation, it's a horrible alternative. Try not to squander possibilities. Obviously, in case you're not feeling like it (in light of nerves, not feeling that you're dressed properly, or some other explanation), that is justifiable. It probably won't be the opportune time for your objective, either, particularly if there are any prompts in the individual's mien that show serious concentration or inconvenience. However, don't let the open door cruise you by. Likewise don't send an email saying I saw you prior and didn't utter a word, since that is frightening. Simply continue to choice #3. 2. Approach On the off chance that the individual isn't occupied with a discussion or looking noticeably annoyed, sit tight for an inert second, at that point step up and attempt this content: Greetings [use the conventional Mr./Ms. furthermore, the individual's last name]. Do you have a second? [If the appropriate response is no, state thank you and proceed onward. In the event that the appropriate response is yes, continue.] I simply needed to come over and present myself. My name is [your name] and I've truly made the most of your work, particularly [something as of late in the news]. I'm [a bit about you and your background], and on the off chance that you ever have some time, I'd love to hear increasingly about your work and profession way. What I'm suggesting here is a methodology grounded in blandishment, curtness, and regard for others' time. You would prefer not to quickly go into pitch mode and hazard seeming as though you're selling utilized vehicles. An educational meeting is low-power for the two gatherings and, insofar as you're readied, can kick you off on building up a significant association. Obviously, this individual can react to your methodology by dismissing you (ideally considerately like, No, thank you or I'm not intrigued). You could likewise get the green light that you're searching for and leave with another chance! Take the risk. 3. The Pretzel No, this isn't some enticing move step. It's a strategy I learned at my organization, Bureau Blank, about taking an indirect way with systems administration. Instead of drawing in the objective individual straightforwardly, bounce over to LinkedIn and check whether at least one individuals in your system are all the more firmly associated with the person in question. Provided that this is true? Connect and request a presentation or support. I got a pretzel (in the event that I can put it that way) as of late when a graduate school associate reached me for the benefit of an individual who is keen on becoming familiar with Bureau Blank. He commended her experience and said these watchwords: I think you'll be dazzled by her. Who in your system can say that regarding you? Recognize them and request the kindness since you'll get a lot nearer to the chance. Consider it along these lines: You could compose a letter to President Obama yourself, however in the event that you could get somebody in the Cabinet to support you, is there any good reason why you wouldn't? The way in to these choices is thinking first, at that point acting with judgment. Consider what will put forth interfacing with you a significant attempt for the individual you need to meet. When you know, be striking and venture up. Chances don't come around twice, so have an arrangement and be prepared for whatever comes. Like my folks have let me know for quite a long time, in the event that you don't ask, the appropriate response is consistently no. Photograph of man waving politeness of Shutterstock.

Are Resumes a Thing of the Past

Are Resumes a Thing of the Past Dear Coach Wolfgang, Is the resume a thing of the past? Thanks for the question. Lately, Ive been hearing people I respect dismiss the resume as an irrelevant tool in todays electronic and online age. The argument says that all a candidate needs today is a LinkedIn profile. Lets look at that statement. I think what this really means is that all a hiring manager or recruiter needs is enough information on social networks to determine if you should be invited for an interview or not. I believe that times are changing and the resume isnt relied on as heavily as it was in the past. I also feel that social networks are used quite a bit for candidate sourcing and screening. The most prominent example is how companies and recruiters use LinkedIn to find candidates. Its a social world and job seekers have to embrace the way social networks have changed job hunting.Regardless of changing times, however, a resume is still a table stake for professionals seeking a new job. The resume isnt dead but it is no longer the lone tool used in the job application. LinkedIn is actually more important for two reasons: LinkedIn profiles are reviewed as much if not more than a resume. LinkedIn is used to find candidates and not showing up in a search can be considered a red flag. So keep your resume up-to-date; by no means is it a thing of the past. More importantly, realize that the information on your resume needs to be available on social networks, particularly LinkedIn. A modern resume now takes a few different forms. What will the resume look like in 5 years? It will be interesting to find out.

Why you cant afford to ignore office politics

Why you can't bear to overlook workplace issues Why you can't bear to overlook workplace issues Workplace issues. Inner circles. Progressive systems. Arrangements. Can't live with them, can't work together without 'em.But imagine a scenario in which you incredibly don't care for managing workplace issues. Would it help to realize that you're not the only one? Since you're not; a long way from it.Office legislative issues is troublesome and painfulResearchers Marian N. Ruderman and Patricia J. Ohlott as of late found that numerous female supervisors feel that taking part in political conduct is troublesome and agonizing. Some even seen it as evil.Evil might be a fairly solid word, however my experience has been that most ladies think that its difficult to perceive how exploring workplace issues can be something besides a negative encounter. In addition to the fact that it is undesirable, workplace issues can be an intense undertaking to master.According to a pre-workshop study of 100 hopeful ladies pioneers in hey tech who went to my workshop in 2013, just 2% firmly concurred th at they realized how to explore workplace issues in a positive, compelling way.So we've built up that on the off chance that you don't actually leap up each morning, eager to go to work and play the round of workplace issues, you aren't the only one. In any case, stop and think for a minute: by disregarding workplace issues, you could be harming your profession in a larger number of ways than you can imagine.Politically insightful individuals improve in their careersResearch by the Center for Creative Leadership demonstrated that individuals who are politically clever have better vocation possibilities, better vocation directions, and are viewed as progressively promotable. They are likewise less inclined to capitulate to profession constraining derailment. An creator and vocations master, Erin Burt notes, Keeping away from (workplace issues) through and through can be dangerous for your vocation. Each working environment has a perplexing arrangement of intensity, and you can - and s hould - work it morally to your best advantage.Any way you take a gander at it, workplace issues are staying put. In any case, fortunately there are approaches to show signs of improvement at it, and they're presumably much simpler than you think. You can figure out how to be decidedly politically savvySo what should be possible to make workplace issues increasingly acceptable and simpler to explore? The appropriate response: construct the expertise of being emphatically politically savvy. The creators of Political Skill at Work (Davies-Black, 2010), the aftereffect of more than two many years of examination into authoritative legislative issues, guarantee that political aptitude isn't really manipulative. … appropriately applied, they state, it makes beneficial things occur, both for the individuals who use it and for the associations where they work. They recognized four skills of individuals who are decidedly political:1. Social keenness; 2. Relational impact; 3. Systems administration capacity; 4. Sincerity. In different words, assemble your affecting and systems administration aptitudes, and do it with earnestness â€" and inspiration â€" to succeed. While you're doing that, focus on the social elements that encompass you at work, and you'll fabricate positive abilities for exploring workplace issues, and as a little something extra â€" become more promotable. And that is not insidious by any means, is it?!Additional Resources: Ruderman, M.N. what's more, Ohlott, P.J. Branding Your Resume - Creating a Lasting Impression

Branding Your Resume - Creating a Lasting Impression All this talk about the importance of branding your resume for your job search … what it really comes down to is name recognition. You want to set yourself apart so the hiring manager remembers your name and calls you for the interview. But how do you really know if you’ve created a personal brand for yourself and infused that brand into your resume? Here are some top indicators that you’ve successfully branded your resume. TARGETING You’ve targeted your resume to one specific position and customized the job title, professional summary, and keywords to highlight your most relevant experience and expertise in relation to this target position. The opposite of this would be a very bland and generic objective statement or blanket career summary that could describe almost any professional. VISUAL BRANDING You’ve used various visually appealing elements to brand yourself and your resume. Using color, shading, boxes, charts, graphs, work samples, design elements, and occupational icons to set your resume apart from the competition. The opposite of this would be a boring old resume template that makes you look like every other job seeker. VERBAL BRANDING Examples, testimonials, case studies, one-liners, slogans, mission statements, and success stories could all be used as part of personally branding your resume. Each one of these is so unique to you that it can’t help but distinguish you from other applicants. No two job seekers would have the same verbal branding. Not including these elements runs the risk of making you look and sound similar to all the other applicants vying for the same position. Personal branding, when broken down into these three areas, is easier to tackle. Simply take one element at a time and address it within your resume, and before you realize it you’ll have a completely branded representation of YOU. You’ll notice your resume response rate increasing, and you’ll be more confident about presenting yourself to the employer for consideration. Rather not tackle branding your own resume? That’s OK too. We use a comprehensive resume and personal branding strategy session when we work with our clients, and my writers are masters at defining a client’s personal brand and value proposition and then marketing that message on their resume. Hope Springs Eternal

Expectation Springs Eternal Bone Sharot compose The Optimism Bias, a book on why people quite often see the future as confident and sunny. She has contemplated several subjects, youthful and old, and found that regardless of the chances, we generally accept that tomorrow will be better. We're evidently hard wired that way. The entrancing inquiry is: the reason? One of the attributes that set people apart from most different animals is our capacity to see into the future; to go ahead in time. It's what causes us plan. We can for example, settle on a choice to go shopping for food despite the fact that we just eaten a major dinner; we realize we'll be ravenous later, and we're out of eggs, so we shop. The catch is that we additionally know, through our capacity to see the future, that we're going to die. Everyone does. Scientists accept that the information on death, when our progenitors' cerebrums sufficiently developed to get it, could have been devastating. It could have brought about a crippling trepidation and despondency that would have left advancement speechless, except if a psychological predisposition toward great results developed at the equivalent time. at the end of the day, being hopeful spared the species. It may in any case be doing so today. On the off chance that you want to, or you figure you can't, you're right. That's simply the substance of the idea of the inevitable outcome. A few people accept that inevitable outcomes don't simply foresee the future, they impact it. Always the self assured person, I trust it too. I accept that you can impact the result of an occasion by accepting that you will win (or make the deal, or get the job.) And I'm not alone. Many expert competitors practice representation before an event. They run the course or play the game again and again in their brains, arranging turns, making the play, defeating snags, and obviously, winning. Nobody ever envisions a rival coming up from behind to take the lead. The expression unavoidable outcome was authored by American humanist Robert Merton in the 1940's. (He additionally authored the expressions good example and unintended outcomes, so he was on a significant move.) Scientists accept that inevitable outcomes can impact everything from scholarly execution to enduring a fatal sickness. We people likewise have an affirmation predisposition that drives us to watch information that bolsters our own beliefs. If you accept your manager detests you, you'll discover many pieces of information seven days that help your theory. If you accept he loves you, you'll additionally discover many activities that help that theory. Our desires structure our general surroundings to some degree since we accept the proof that our psyche supplies. Some of the time, our desires structure reality since we make a move on the things we accept. On the off chance that I accept that my child is a talented competitor, I may spend more cash on preparing or instructing or equipment. Over time, these ventures may to be sure assist him with accomplishing more in sports. If I hadn't accepted that he was extraordinary, I may have contributed less, in this way guaranteeing less achievement. On the off chance that you accept your next proposition for employment is directly around the bend, you may act uniquely in contrast to in the event that you don't think you have a chance. You may dress in an unexpected way, stand somewhat taller, grin more, and set aside effort to compose a superior spread letter. Eventually you may make your very own unavoidable outcome. It's not possible for anyone to return and start a fresh start, yet anybody can begin today and make another consummation. (Author Maria Robinson.)

I know that when I was submitting my resume, I had no idea how to format it and I just tried the old school methods like using bold and underlined keywords. Luckily, I was able to figure this out, but it did take me a long time and I wasted a lot of time submitting resumes and trying to figure this all out.Instead of wasting time, I decided to make sure that I submitted my resume and cover letter to as many different companies as possible. This actually took some time, but I was able to narrow my search and eventually find what I'm talking about. Now that I know what to use and how to use it, I'm sure that you will be able to find the right resume format for your next job interview. There are a lot of common resume formats that you can use, but they are all the same. Now, not all of them are the same, but the majority of them are the same. Of course, some of them may look very different, but they are still just the same basic template. Here's the trick - most of these forms to use a '4-page format' which will give you more room to be creative when creating a resume. The first tip that I have for you when it comes to formatting your resume the best way is to avoid using bold and underlined keywords unless you are really pressed for time. Some of the best resume formats will actually skip this part of the job application process altogether, but there are some companies that will require you to submit a standard resume without the use of the keywords. For the best resume format of 2020, the best thing that you can do is make sure that you write it from a true perspective of who you are. It's important that you create a resume that showcases your skills and talents, but it's als o important that you keep it relevant to your current job. Most people don't realize this, but if you are applying for a position that you have already held, it's smart to include information about your position at your previous company.By being concise and providing a little bit of information about yourself on your resume format, you will be able to stand out from the crowd and get a great chance of getting a new job offer. Now, it's smart to never repeat a specific keyword over again, but you can do this with specific titles and key phrases in your resume. You can also add a little more information in an outline format, but you need to make sure that you know what type of information you are going to provide. One last tip for the best resume format of 2020 is to make sure that you try to follow a standard format. The best way to do this is to stick to the 4-page format and only include titles and key phrases once in a while. These are the guidelines that you need to follow in orde r to have a job interview that will be memorable.

Universities that CEOs Attended the Most - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Having a good education is one of the first steps of having a good career. In order to find out the colleges that CEOs attended, Kittleman Search made a study with 500 CEOs of Fortune 500 companies. In this study, the company tried to identify the schools that produced the most CEOs. First, the undergraduate schools that each CEO went has been found and then, these schools were categorized whether they were public or private. According to this list, the first five schools that produce the most CEOs are University of Wisconsin with 14 CEOs, Harvard University with 12 CEOs, Cornell University with 10 CEOs, University of Michigan with 8 CEOs and Stanford University with 7 CEOs. It is also interesting to see that 18 CEOs did not attend any universities at all. Also, 9.2% of these CEOs attended Ivy League schools. Besides Fortune 500 companies, Kittleman also searched for the most successful non-profit leaders to find out the schools that they have attended. The top 5 schools that produced the most non-profit leaders are Yale University with 4 CEOs, Georgetown University with 3 CEOs, Princeton University with 3 CEOs, State University of New York (SUNY) with 2 CEOs and University of Wisconsin with 2 CEOs. 55 leaders went to private universities whereas 32 leaders went to public universities. Writing a Bartender Resume

Whether you like to drink alone in your own home or in a bar or lounge, bartending is a perfect job for anyone.Bartending has been known throughout the world for over five decades now. Bars worldwide depend on bartenders to handle the important parts of the business. For example, the host of the party, the server, the customer service representative, and the master's are just a few of the important roles that bartenders are responsible for. The fact is, bart enders are the people that keep the bar running and the business running. This means that you have a career that will not only pay you well but is also stable in terms of hours and employment. A bartender career also pays well and offers job security. What more could you ask for? When writing a bartender resume, the first thing you need to do is think about what you do. How many responsibilities does your specific bartending career require? The job description of a bartender may range from being a bartender that supplies drinks to being an assistant that keeps the floor running smoothly. This is all up to you, but make sure that you focus on the details in your bartender resume description. You should use a format that is easy to read, even if you know very little about bartending. While you could throw in your number of years working as a bartender, do not include this information on your resume. In fact, bartending degrees have their own specific format and only a Bachelor's degree w ill be accepted. When writing a bartender resume, the most important part is the first sentence. Remember that the purpose of your bartender resume is to identify you as the most appropriate candidate for the position. This should be short and to the point. 6 Ways the Healthcare Industry Will Change in the Next Decade CareerMetis.com

6 Ways the Healthcare Industry Will Change in the Next Decade â€" CareerMetis.com Since the early 1900s, the healthcare industry has changed by leaps and bounds every decade.Surgeries look and feel totally different than they did less than 100 years ago, and patients are better able to find treatments and pain control options that work.eval?Of course, these changes have come improvements in healthcare reform as well as increased costs. If you’re earning a degree in nursing or are simply interested in emerging health news, prepare to see the following 6 changes throughout the healthcare industry within the next decade.1) Affordable Care Act ChangesevalAlthough the proposed destruction and replacement of the Affordable Care Act did not take place with the last administration change as was expected, you will still notice changes throughout the health insurance industry in the next few years.More insurers may opt-out of the marketplace while tweaks to the law help to drive down prices for the middle class.2) Enhanced Mobile Health TechnologyMobile healthcare has dras tically changed care for those living in rural areas, and improved communication and informatics will continue to drive this form of care even for those living in the city.Prepare to see your doctor begin to offer mobile visits or video chats and to communicate with you through video and email without needing to see your face in many cases.?Mobile healthcare will also help your doctor treat you after surgery without having to set foot in the hospital. With the growing number of BSN-credentialed nurses in the field, the need is even higher for health information to be pulled up quickly online.3) New Energy SourcesevalWhen it comes to radiologic imaging, the past has mostly seen its use as a way to observe internal anatomical structures and human tissue; however, new advancements in energy sources will allow researchers to evaluate tissues on a cellular and even molecular level.?These new magnetic radiofrequency devices and the new capabilities they grant researchers will reduce the c hance of misdiagnosis, making patient care safer and more reliable overall.4) Increased Retail Health ClinicsClinics located in retail spaces will continue to boom with fewer people heading to the emergency room. This will help improve triage and care in the emergency room as retail clinics are allowed to treat increasing numbers of problems. With the improvement in health informatics, retail clinic practitioners will be able to pull up your health information quickly online.5) Liquid BiopsiesevalLiquid biopsies will decrease the pain associated with the traditional biopsy because doctors will be able to perform genetic testing and disease testing using blood, serum or other fluids throughout the body rather than only solid samples. In June 2016, the FDA approved the first liquid cancer biopsy, and numerous companies are working on other liquid biopsy possibilities.eval6) Improved Robotic SurgeriesWhile robotic surgeries have been around for a while, the improved robots will have four arms instead of only two and will be able to be turned and repositioned without having to be removed from theirdocks. These newer robots will also be paired with operating tables that can reposition themselves, further decreasing the chance for human error.?Technology like imaging will also become more digital as time goes on, increasing the accuracy of diagnoses and facilitating procedures.?Of course, this is just a glance at the numerous changes in policies, technologies and more that are coming throughout the whole field.?As researchers continue to learn more about the body and politicians continue to enact reforms based on what their constituents are saying, you will see even more changes that you probably did not think were possible a few short years ago.?As these changes occur, you will certainly notice changes in everything from your clinic visit to your health insurance policy.

6 Great Resume Resources - CareerAlley

6 Great Resume Resources - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. As a hiring manager, I like to read candidates resumes from the end of the resume to the top of the resume (assuming a chronological resume format). This allows me to get a feel for the candidates education and progressive work experience. Of course, every hiring manager is different and may have different preferences in terms of resume formats and their review process. Using a specific resume format should be driven by the persons experience, industry and the type of opportunity they are seeking. There are quite a few resume formats, but the four major basic formats (with probably hundreds of variations) are chronological, functional, combination, or targeted. The descriptions and potential uses are summarized below. While the resume format is important, content and writing style are (obviously) more important. More important than any of the items mentioned is that your resume must be error free from misspellings and typos. Additionally, your resume should be accurate (as in dont try to fudge the dates, companies you worked for, your experience or period of time you worked at any one company). Putting all of this together into a resume that will get you hired can be a daunting task to say the lease. Luckily, there are many resources available on the Internet to help you with this. A few of the links listed below, as well as some suggested reading. Resume Structure, Formats and what not to do: 5 Steps to a Great Resume Formats This article provides definitions of each of the resume section types (skills, work history, education, etc.) as well as brief descriptions of each of the four major resume formats along with links to resume examples and related articles. 7 Things You Shouldnt Include on Your Resume A lot of articles and books offer advice on what should be included on your resume. Interview with Liz Lynch, Author of Smart Networking -

Interview with Liz Lynch, Author of Smart Networking - Liz Lynch, founder of the Center for Networking Excellence and author of the newly released Smart Networking: Attract a Following In Person and Online, mastered the skill of networking from the ground up and is now a sought-after speaker who brings a practical and insightful perspective to networking that has connected with a global audience. Her printed and audio products have sold on six continents, shes been invited to speak at conferences and organizations around the world and her writings have been translated into multiple languages. So, when Liz invited me to join her virtual interview series contest for bloggers, I was delighted to sign on! Liz touts her new book as the essential guidebook for building business relationships in a wired world. (Please vote for my interview by clicking HERE and scrolling to vote for me in week #2) I enjoyed the opportunity to include her expert perspective on a topic regular readers know is one of the most important for job seekers: networking for success! Here are my questions and what Liz had to say: What homework should prospective networkers do before they attempt to engage in new networking relationships? Im glad you asked about homework, because so many people go into networking situations completely unprepared, expecting magic to happen. The best homework is to create a plan for your networking (Chapter 13 of Smart Networking takes you step-by-step to develop one). You want an overall plan, a big picture strategy, but you also want a plan for your ground game. Before you go into a networking event or even a one-on-one meeting, know exactly why youre going, what you want to know and what you want to convey about yourself. Having a plan will help you sound more confident and give you more confidence. It will also help you achieve what you want much faster. How do you advise busy people seeking to take advantage of the best online AND in-person networking? What are the must haves in a successful networking suitcase? In marketing its almost always more expensive to acquire a new customer than to keep an old one. If youre churning and burning through your network, youll have to do a lot more work and spend a lot more time just to stay even. So if I had to pick the must haves they would be those tools that allow you to stay in touch with your network and communicate with them easily, namely online sites like LinkedIn and Facebook, and those skills like mastering the art of the ask that help you get the help you need when you need it. What are your top three tips to help professionals who are behind the 8-ball in todays economy because they havent already built a strong network? Realize that you do have a network already of former colleagues, classmates, etc. and its worth spending time reconnecting with those folks to re-establish your connection. Use online networking sites to find these contacts and invite them to connect with you so you have an easy way to reach out to them later. Tell everyone you know what you are looking for. How can an unemployed job seeker network effectively without seeming desperate? First take action with the steps outlined in the previous question, so you have your network set up to help you. Then, take additional actions to get visible. It may be tempting to stay at home and not want to get out in public because you dont feel great about yourself, but start meeting people in different ways, like volunteering at a local charity or signing up for art class. Depending how long youve been job hunting, getting in a new environment can help shake things up and give you a strong purpose to follow that can spill over into improving how you feel about your job search. What advice do you have about cultural differences to consider when networking? I was in China in June and realized how people there seem much more comfortable asking questions that we wouldnt find appropriate here in the U.S. Questions like, How much money do you make? would leave most of us aghast. Networking across borders requires diplomacy. Its helpful if you know youre going to be traveling to get some guidance from a local. And be prepared to respectfully decline to answer questions that make you uncomfortable. What questions do you have about networking? Id be happy to answer them in a future post or direct you to a resource! Dont forget that I am available to help with all of your job search needs! Everything you need to know is right here on this site!
